What does the committee do?

This committee is an established system used to look back and enforce upon rules of the Senate. The Rules committee organizes and creates studies of how Congress operates and is constantly trying to improve this study by simplifying the operations with the Judicial and Legislative branch of the U.S. It creates, revises, and implements Senate infrastructure plans.

What types of bills does the committee see?

The Rules committee is referred to all proposed legislation and matters relating to:
  • Congressional organization in rules and procedures
  • Corrupt practices
  • Credentials and qualifications of Senate members
  • Federal elections such as President, VP, Congress members
  • Presidential succession
  • Payment of money or making charges out of Senate funds
  • Government Printing Office

The Rules Committee is currently working on and holding different topics of Senate including:

9/29/10 Filibuster: Ideas to Reduce Delay and Encourage Debate in Senate
The Committee held a series of hearings reviewing the history U.S. Senate filibuster (tradition of unlimited debate in the Senate) and improvements to either cut down or enhance it.

7/28/10 Legislative Proposals to Change Senate Procedures
The Committee will receive testimony on S. Res. 465, by Senator Lautenberg, to permit the Senate to avoid unnecessary delay and vote on matters for which floor debate has ceased; and S. Res. 440, by Senator Bennet, improving the Senate cloture process.

Robert Bennett (Ranking Member): He has served three terms as a US senator. His main issues are energy, social reform, economy, taxes, education, heath care, national security and defense. He has the respect of many and a fantastic reputation.
